My #1 Tip for Amazing Family Photos
One of the questions families ask me most before a photo session is:
“How do we make sure our family photos turn out well?”
They worry about the outfits.
They worry about whether their kids will cooperate.
They worry about smiling the “right” way.
But after photographing hundreds of families across Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh, I’ve learned something important.
The most beautiful photos don’t come from perfect posing.
They come from connection.
And that leads to my number one tip for amazing family photos:
Focus on Each Other — Not the Camera
The camera is just there to document what’s already happening.
The magic happens when families forget about the camera entirely and simply enjoy being together.
When parents pull their children close.
When siblings whisper secrets.
When everyone bursts into laughter for no reason at all.
Those moments cannot be forced.
They happen when you let yourselves be present together.
And those are the images that become the most meaningful years later.
Why Connection Always Photographs Better Than Posing
When families focus too much on posing, photos can start to feel stiff.
But when families interact naturally, the photos become full of life.
Instead of:
“Everyone look at the camera and smile.”
Try:
walking together
hugging your kids
lifting your toddler into the air
whispering something silly
tickling your children until they laugh
These small interactions create movement, emotion, and authenticity — the ingredients of beautiful photographs.
What I Tell Every Family Before Their Session
Before every family session, I remind parents of something simple:
Your only job is to love on your kids.
You don’t need perfect behavior.
You don’t need perfect smiles.
You just need to be together.
Some of my favorite images happen when:
kids are being goofy
toddlers are running wild
parents are laughing at the chaos
Because that’s what real family life looks like.
And someday those messy, joyful moments will mean everything.
The Photos You'll Treasure Most Later
Years from now, the photos that matter most usually aren’t the perfectly posed ones.
They’re the ones that remind you how this season of life felt.
The way your child wrapped their arms around your neck.
The way your toddler rested their head on your shoulder.
The way everyone laughed together in the golden evening light.
Those are the images that become part of your family's story.
A Simple Reminder
When you’re taking photos of your own family, remember this:
Don’t worry about looking perfect.
Instead, pause for a moment.
Pull your children close.
Look at them.
Laugh with them.
Because the most beautiful family photos are simply love, documented.
