A Durham Backyard Wedding Full of Music and Love
When I arrived to photograph this Durham wedding, I knew within the first few minutes that this wasn’t going to be an ordinary day. The groom had a cream Fender Stratocaster slung around his shoulder. He was grinning like he’d already won.
This is the kind of detail I live for. Not because it’s a great photo — though it is — but because it tells you everything about who this person is. And today, he was marrying his person.
The Ceremony
The ceremony was held in a private backyard in Durham — an intimate, wooded space with brick paths and a rustic cabin that felt like it had been waiting for exactly this moment. This is the kind of day that Events by Rebs does so beautifully — keeping everything feeling personal and unhurried, down to the last detail. Gold chiavari chairs in a small semicircle. And the flowers. Oh, the flowers. Dormant Plant Parlor created something genuinely extraordinary — towering installations of poppies, garden roses, larkspur, and trailing amaranthus, plus the most lush, unstructured bridal bouquet I’ve photographed in a long time. Every arrangement felt alive, like it had just been gathered from the most beautiful garden you’ve never seen. It felt like stepping into a secret world.
After the Ceremony
After the recessional — all cheers and raised phones and absolute happiness — the family gathered in the wooded yard. This is often the moment I love most at intimate weddings. No grand ballroom entrance, no coordinator with a clipboard. Just people who love each other, dressed up and laughing in the afternoon sun.
Downtown Durham Portraits
We ended the day at The Durham Hotel — and if you’ve ever been, you know what golden hour does to that building. Clean white geometry, the graphic black-and-white tile of the entrance, a sky going full amber behind the rooftops.
