Cally at Eno River Farms — A Childhood Portrait Session in Hillsborough, NC
There's a particular age that parents describe the same way, every time. The voice that still sounds like that. The way they run. The roundness that hasn't quite left their face yet. Parents describe it the way you describe something you're already afraid of losing.
That's the age Cally is.
Her family did something I've only been part of a handful of times — they commissioned a painter. Mary Morvant is a fine art portrait painter based in Louisiana who works from photographic reference to create painted portraits meant to hang on a wall for a lifetime. Before she could begin, they needed photographs. Not snapshots — something true. Something that actually showed who Cally is, with enough light and dimension that an artist could work from it for weeks.
That's how we ended up at Eno River Farm (2127 St. Mary's Road, Hillsborough, NC) on a quiet afternoon. The farm has wide open fields, soft shade at the edges, and the kind of warm late-afternoon light that makes every color look like it already belongs in a painting. Which, in this case, was exactly the point.
A session like this isn't about posing. It's closer to quiet accompaniment — staying low, staying nearby, staying out of the way enough that she forgets I'm there. I'm watching for the real moments. The in-between ones. The ones that say: this is who she is right now.
Those are the images a painter can work from. And when Cally is grown, she'll have a painted portrait of herself at this exact age, in this light, from this afternoon — hanging somewhere in her family's home.
I don't take that lightly.
