Senior year holds a strange and beautiful mix of things: excitement for what comes next, a little nostalgia for what is ending, and a person who is still becoming. That is why I love making senior portraits that feel like more than a photo for an announcement. I want them to feel like you.

I photographed Sadie’s senior session at Blackwood Farm Park in Orange County, between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. We made plenty of portraits centered on Sadie, and her mom and dog stepped into a few frames, too. I love that choice. Years from now, those photos will hold a little more of what this season felt like and who shared it with her.

Senior portraits that feel like the person you are

There is room for a polished portrait, but also for movement, laughter, and the expressions that happen when you stop thinking about the camera. During a senior photo session, I offer guidance when it helps and leave space for the moments that unfold naturally.

Sadie’s session is a lovely reminder that senior photos can be personal without being complicated. A place that feels good to explore, time to settle in, and a few people (or pets) you love can make the experience feel much more like your own.

Why Blackwood Farm Park works for senior photos

Blackwood Farm Park has open fields, trees, and historic farm buildings that give us variety without needing to travel between locations. It feels spacious and easygoing, which makes it a beautiful setting for outdoor senior portraits. Located between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, it is also a convenient option for families coming from Durham and elsewhere in the Triangle.

The setting can give you a classic portrait with a simple natural backdrop, then a completely different feeling a few steps away. What matters most, though, is that the location gives you room to relax and be yourself.

Can my parent or dog join my senior photo session?

Absolutely. Your senior portraits should still focus on you, but a few photos with someone who has been part of the journey can become some of the most meaningful images in the gallery. Sadie’s mom and dog joined her for a few, and I’m so glad they did.

You can decide ahead of time whether you want a parent, sibling, friend, or pet to step in for a handful of portraits. We can keep it simple and make sure there is still plenty of time for photographs of you on your own. If you’re bringing a dog, let me know when you inquire so we can plan the easiest part of the session for them to join.
