What to Wear for Family Photos in Raleigh, NC (Lifestyle Session Outfit Guide)
What to Wear for Family Photos — Tips from a Raleigh Family Photographer
One of the first questions almost every family asks me is: What should we wear?
It's a good question — and honestly, outfits matter more than most people think. Not because perfection is the goal, but because the right clothing choices let your family be the main event. When outfits are working, you stop thinking about them. That's exactly what you want.
Here's what I tell every family before their session.
Start with a color palette, not a matching set
The days of everyone in white shirts and jeans are behind us — and that's a good thing. What works now is a soft, coordinated palette of 3–4 complementary colors. Think cream, sage green, and dusty blue. Beige, soft pink, and light denim. Ivory, tan, and muted olive. These tones photograph beautifully in natural light and keep the focus where it belongs — on your people.
You don't need to match. You need to feel like you belong in the same photo.
Let mom go first
Start with mom's outfit — something you feel genuinely good in — and build everyone else around it. When mom feels comfortable and confident, the whole session moves differently. I've seen it every time.
Choose clothes that move
Lifestyle family photography is all about real moments — walking, laughing, picking kids up, chasing someone across a field. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, knit sweaters, soft cotton — these all photograph beautifully because they move. Stiff, formal clothing fights against that energy.
Keep patterns simple
One subtle pattern in the group is plenty. Everyone else in solids or simple textures. Avoid large logos and busy graphic prints — they pull the eye away from faces and connection, which is the whole point.
Dress for the season
Raleigh's seasons give you so much to work with. In spring — cherry blossoms, dogwoods, that soft green light — light pastels, cream, blush, and sage all shine. In fall, lean into the foliage with rust, camel, olive, and burgundy. Let the season be part of the story.
Think about where you're shooting
Soft neutrals and flowy textures feel right at Duke Gardens. Earthy linens and relaxed layers work beautifully in fields and wooded settings. Downtown Raleigh sessions can handle something a little more structured and modern. Your location and your outfits should feel like they belong together.
The most important thing
Wear something that feels like you. The families whose photos I love most aren't the ones who were perfectly styled — they're the ones who showed up comfortable, present, and ready to just be together.
That's what makes a photo worth keeping.
