This Is What a Durham Newborn Session Actually Looks Like

The first few weeks with a newborn move impossibly fast.

One minute you're staring at this tiny person who just arrived — trying to memorize the weight of them in your arms, the way your older kid looks at the baby like they're still deciding what to make of this whole situation. And then somehow, weeks later, that feeling starts to blur at the edges.

That's exactly why Elio's family reached out. They wanted to hold onto this season — the real version of it. Not posed or perfect. Just theirs.

We spent the morning in their Durham home, in the soft light of the kids' room, moving slowly. Their daughter was in full big-sister mode — gentle one moment, completely herself the next. Elio slept through most of it, the way newborns do — nestled into his mom's arms, then his dad's. His tiny hand curled around nothing at all.

This is what Durham newborn photography looks like when it's done in your home, in your light, in your story.

What to Wear to Your Newborn Session

This is one of the most common questions I get — and it matters more than most people think. What you wear shapes the entire feeling of your photos. Here's how I think about it.

Keep it simple.

Busy patterns, bold logos, and bright colors pull focus away from the people in the frame. You want the eye to land on your faces — on that look you're giving your baby — not on what you're wearing.

Think texture over color.

Neutral tones are your friend — creams, warm browns, sage green, soft white. But "neutral" doesn't have to mean boring. A chunky knit sweater, a linen dress, a soft waffle-weave fabric — texture is what makes a photo feel rich, even in a simple palette.

The whole family should feel cohesive, not matching.

You don't need to be in identical outfits. You just need to feel like you belong in the same photo. Think tonal — everyone in warm neutrals, or everyone in dusty, muted shades. Elio's dad wore a rust-brown sweater. His mom wore a soft floral dress in the same warm palette. They didn't match. They harmonized.

Comfort matters — especially for your toddler.

If your older kid is uncomfortable in what they're wearing, you'll spend the whole session managing a meltdown instead of making memories. Let them wear something soft and familiar. A simple tee and linen pants. Whatever makes them feel like themselves.

For the newborn:

A simple onesie, a swaddle wrap, or nothing at all. I always bring a few neutral wraps to sessions. The simpler, the better — let that tiny face be the whole story.

These are the moments that are so easy to tell yourself you'll remember. The way your toddler whispered to the baby. The way your partner looked holding them for the first time. You think you'll carry it forever — and you will, but differently. Photos are how you carry it whole.
